Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to contribute in the
development process of learning and teaching mathematics
by proposing a model for learning and teaching mathematics.
The model is built on the principles of the constructivism
theory by studying and analyzing a number of models which
were constructed, tested, implemented and its efficiency
proven in different locations around the world. The proposed
model consists of five steps which start by introducing
mathematical problems and activities to promote learners to
retrieve their knowledge and previous expertise to discover
the mathematical concept and solve the problem. Linked to
these is a simultaneous and final evaluation. Following these
steps is the applications, solutions and explanations which
permit the transfer of the new acquired mathematical
knowledge to new situations. The study concludes with a
suggestion to test the proposed framework/model and after its
correctness is proven, teachers are advised to practice such
models and evaluate their affect on the variables of the
learning and teaching process
