When analyzing any play we speak about three important aspects
1-the relationship between the plot and the characters:
The characters in the play set some sub-plots that form the general plot. Tony begins the play with his sub-plot of deceiving Marlow and Hasting.
Kate's sub-plot of deceiving Marlow that she is a barmaid.
Constance Hasting and Tony have also their sub-plot to steal the jewels and flea to France.
Mrs.Hardcastle's sub-plot to make a match between her niece and her son.
These sub-plots form the general plot of the play.
2-the type of the play:
It was agreed that it is a comedy but what type of comedy?
At the beginning it was set that it is sentimental comedy (laughing comedy) but after that there was a confusion. they say that it is a satire because it represents either fools or strange characters. it was also said that it is a comedy of manners because every character pretends to be polite which contrast with his true behavior. it was also said to be romantic comedy because Kate is stooping so that she can win the love of Marlow, so Kate and Marlow are a very good example of romantic comedy.
3-features of the society we can get through the play;
Women were allowed to love but not to choose their husbands
It was the parents who choose the husbands for their daughters.
Though women were not allowed to choose a husband ,they were allowed to agree or refuse him.
